Abstract

Religious education is one of the main foundations in building student character. In the public school environment, religious education faces complex challenges, among others due to variations in student backgrounds, government policies, and developments in social dynamics. This article aims to discuss various problems faced in the implementation of religious education in public schools and provide solutions to increase its efficiency. Public schools in Indonesia act as places of inclusive and pluralistic education. The religious education curriculum is created to provide religious insight according to the religion that students follow. However, its implementation often experiences various challenges both from a technical and substantive perspective. On the one hand, religious education needs to respect the principle of pluralism, while on the other hand, religious education must adhere to the spiritual and moral values ​​taught by each religion. Successful religious education in public schools can be a strong basis for producing a young generation who is well-behaved, tolerant, and makes a positive contribution to the nation and state. By improving appropriate policies, developing infrastructure, improving the quality of teachers, and adapting to advances in technology, religious education has great potential to create a generation that is ready to face global challenges.
